Australian utility-scale solar farm construction is set to become significantly faster and more cost-effective following a major investment by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). On October 13, 2026, ARENA announced up to AUD$32.3 million in funding to establish two new robotics manufacturing facilities in Melbourne and Brisbane, directly targeting the most labour-intensive stages of large-scale solar development.

This strategic investment, part of Round 2 of ARENA’s AUD$850 million Solar Sunshot Program, aims to reduce construction costs by up to 6.2% and accelerate project timelines, underpinning Australia’s ambitious renewable energy targets.

Automating the Solar Farm Build

The funding will support two distinct but complementary robotic technologies. Luminous Robotics will receive up to AUD$17.8 million to establish a manufacturing facility in Melbourne. This facility will produce its autonomous LUMI robots, designed specifically for solar panel installation. The goal is to manufacture and deploy approximately 100 LUMI robots by 2029, streamlining the precise placement of solar modules onto racking structures.

Meanwhile, Built Robotics Australia will receive up to AUD$14.5 million for a Brisbane-based hub. This centre will focus on building, integrating, testing, and deploying 12 robotic piling systems. These autonomous systems are engineered to drive the foundation piles that support solar modules, a traditionally time-consuming and arduous task.

“Installing foundations and placing panels are two of the most labour-intensive parts of solar farm construction. It’s hard work in the hot sun,” stated ARENA CEO Darren Miller. “Australia needs to install large volumes of solar quickly and cost-effectively. Local manufacturing and automation can improve the way solar farms are built by reducing construction costs and making installation faster, safer and more efficient; an important part of ARENA’s ultra low-cost solar vision.”

Significant Efficiency and Cost Reductions

The introduction of these robotic systems is projected to deliver substantial efficiency gains. Previous trials of Luminous’s LUMI robots, including at Engie’s 250 MW Goorambat East project in Victoria and Neoen’s 440MW Culcairn Solar Farm in New South Wales, indicated that LUMI could install modules up to 3.5 times faster than current manual methods. This increased speed directly translates to reduced project durations and associated labour costs.

Built Robotics’ autonomous piling systems offer even more dramatic savings in their specific application. The company estimates its robots have the potential to reduce piling time by approximately 82% and cut associated labour costs by 88%. These efficiencies are crucial for accelerating the deployment of the estimated 20 GW of large-scale solar capacity Australia needs to build in the next three years to meet its 82% renewables target by 2030.

Strengthening Local Manufacturing and the Ultra-Low-Cost Solar Vision

This funding marks a pivotal step in moving solar construction robotics from field demonstrations to full-scale production within Australia. By fostering local manufacturing capabilities in Melbourne and Brisbane, the initiative aims to create a domestic equipment supply chain, reduce reliance on international imports, and build specialised skills within the Australian workforce.

ARENA’s investment aligns with its broader “ultra-low-cost solar” vision, which targets achieving 30% solar module efficiency and an installed cost of just 30 cents per watt by 2030. Achieving this benchmark would drive the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) below AUD$20 per MWh, making solar an even more compelling and foundational energy source for Australia’s future. This vision extends beyond utility-scale projects, influencing the broader energy landscape as Australia seeks to Electrify Your Home in 2026: Real Costs, Rebates & Savings Up to $15,000+ and reduce overall energy bills.

While this initiative primarily targets large-scale solar farms, the technological advancements in manufacturing and installation efficiency could eventually influence the broader solar industry, including residential and commercial rooftop installations. As the cost of solar deployment continues to fall, it reinforces the importance of optimising system performance. Homeowners and businesses can already maximise their returns by following best practices for maintenance, as detailed in guides like Maximise Your Solar Output by 25% in 2026: Your Essential Australian Maintenance Guide.

This move by ARENA underscores Australia’s commitment to innovation in renewable energy. The focus on automation in construction addresses critical bottlenecks, ensuring that the country can deploy solar infrastructure at the scale and speed required for a decarbonised grid.
